Finding Psychological Safety in the Scottish Highlands: A Tale of Trust and Honesty

What connection could be between the Scottish Highlands and psychological safety?

You might be surprised to learn that the two are more intertwined than you think, much like the dynamics of relationships. Whether it’s personal connections or the bonds within a team at work, the concept of psychological safety is omnipresent. Recently, at tone HR event, speakers delved into the importance of psychological safety and trust, shedding light on its significance in our lives.

Defining psychological safety isn’t always straightforward. It’s like trying to grasp the vastness of the Highlands themselves — how big is the slice of pie we’re talking about here? Whenever I attempt to explain abstract concepts like this, I always draw from personal experiences. Whether it’s my relationships with loved ones or encounters in everyday life, I find that relatable anecdotes make complex ideas more digestible.

Take, for instance, a recent trip my husband and I took through Scotland. Amidst our journey, we found ourselves in the remote Scottish Highlands, a place so secluded it felt like being at home in my own hills. It was a moment of recognition — there are people living even in the most distant corners, reminding me that I’m not as much of a stranger as I thought.

During a stop in a tiny village, a peculiar incident unfolded. As I made my way to the restroom, I noticed my husband absentmindedly starting the car, seemingly ready to leave without me. It was a bizarre scenario that sparked an unexpected conversation. He casually mentioned a fleeting thought he had while waiting for me: what if he just drove off and left me there? My initial reaction was one of disbelief and confusion. But rather than erupting in anger, I chose a different path.

In situations like these, there are typically two ways to react. I could have exploded with frustration, ruining the moment and potentially damaging our relationship. Instead, I opted for humor. I jokingly remarked,

“Well, there goes my chance at a Highland romance with a rugged Scotsman. Too bad you had to crush my dreams.”

The beauty of this exchange lies not in my reaction, but in the underlying trust and honesty it represents. My husband felt comfortable sharing a fleeting, irrational thought, knowing it wouldn’t be met with judgment or condemnation. That, to me, is the essence of psychological safety — the freedom to express even the most outlandish ideas without fear of retribution.

In organizations, fostering psychological safety is paramount. It’s not enough to merely discuss its importance; we must exemplify it through tangible examples. By sharing stories like this one, we demystify the concept, making it accessible to all. Psychological safety breeds open communication, trust, and understanding — the bedrock of a healthy organizational culture.

So the next time you find yourself in an unexpected place, like the Scottish Highlands, remember that psychological safety can manifest anywhere. Embrace the honesty, trust, and freedom to express yourself openly. After all, it’s these moments that strengthen our connections and enrich our lives.

Farewell for now,
